Reel Sarasota Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 16, 2026
Reel Sarasota ("we," "our," or "the app") helps anglers find, tag, and share fishing spots around Sarasota, FL, log their catches, and check local conditions. This page explains what information the app collects, how it's used, and your choices.
No account or personal information required
Reel Sarasota does not ask for your email address or a password. When you first open the app, it creates an anonymous identifier for your device using Firebase Anonymous Authentication. The only personal detail we ask for is a nickname or first name to display next to spots you tag and catches you share — we specifically ask that you not use your full legal name or other personal information.
What we collect
- Location — used to center the map near you and to record the coordinates of a spot when you tag it. You can choose to share an exact or "fuzzy" (approximate) location per spot, or keep a spot entirely private on your own device.
- Spots, catches, and photos you choose to share — names, notes, species, bait/gear details, and any photo you attach to a spot or catch. What you mark "Public" is visible to everyone using the app; "Friends Only" is visible to anglers who follow you; "Private" never leaves your device.
- Follow relationships — who you choose to follow, so we can show you their public and friends-only content.
- Ratings — star ratings you give to spots.
- Subscription/purchase status — Apple's App Store handles all payment processing. Reel Sarasota only receives confirmation of whether you have an active Pro subscription; we never see your payment card details.
What we don't do
- We don't collect your name, email, or any other directly identifying information.
- We don't use advertising or analytics SDKs, and we don't track you across other apps or websites.
- We don't sell or share your data with third parties for marketing purposes.
- We don't support comments or free-text messaging between users — sharing is limited to structured spot/catch info and star ratings.
Third-party services we use
Reel Sarasota is built on Google Firebase, which stores the data described above (Firestore database, Anonymous Authentication). We also query free, public data sources to show local conditions:
- Open-Meteo, for current weather conditions near you. Only your approximate coordinates are sent — no information that identifies you.
- NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), for tide predictions near Sarasota.
- Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), for public red tide sampling data.
None of these third-party queries include your name, device identifier, or any way to identify you personally.
Data retention and deletion
You can delete an individual spot or catch you've tagged at any time from within the app, which also removes it from anyone it was shared with. To remove everything associated with your device, delete the app, or contact us using the information below and we'll delete it on request.
Children's privacy
Reel Sarasota is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date.
